uPVC front doors had their moment in the 1990s. Today, composite doors have overtaken them as the default choice for serious replacements โ and for good reason: better thermal performance, better security, and a finish quality that genuinely competes with painted timber.
But "composite" is a wide category. There's a substantial difference between a ยฃ700 budget composite and a ยฃ1,400 Solidor โ and that difference is felt every time you close the door.
The headline differences
| uPVC | Foam-core composite | Solid-core composite | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical price (fitted) | ยฃ500โ800 | ยฃ900โ1,200 | ยฃ1,300โ1,800 |
| Door slab thickness | ~28mm | ~44mm | ~48mm |
| Weight | Light | Medium | Heavy (timber core) |
| U-value | ~1.6 W/mยฒK | ~1.2 W/mยฒK | ~1.0 W/mยฒK |
| Sound when closed | Plasticky | Solid | Substantial |
| PAS24 secured by design | Yes | Yes | Yes |
What you actually feel
The single biggest difference between these categories is weight, and the way the door closes. A uPVC door has a faint plastic ring to it. A foam-core composite has a satisfying thump. A solid-core composite โ Solidor in particular โ closes with the gentle, planted finality of a quality timber door.
For a front door, this matters more than the spec sheet suggests. It's the most-touched piece of architecture in your house, and the way it feels to use sets a tone for the whole property.
Security โ they're closer than you'd think
All three categories are now PAS24:2016 Secured by Design when properly specified. The cylinder is far more important than the door type โ a Yale 3-star or Ultion Sweet anti-snap cylinder is what stops the most common forced-entry method (cylinder snapping). Insist on this regardless of the door slab.
Our recommendation
For most homeowners we recommend a Hallmark or Comp Door foam-core composite โ outstanding security, A-rated thermal performance, premium feel, and a sensible price.
If you want the absolute best โ particularly on a period property where the front door is part of the architecture โ Solidor is worth the extra investment.
