Walk down any street built or renovated since 2018 and the pattern is unmistakable: Anthracite Grey is everywhere. RAL 7016 (or its various manufacturer equivalents) has become the dominant choice for window frames, doors, bi-folds and roofline products across the UK.
Why? And โ more importantly โ should you join in?
How we got here
Until about 2015, white uPVC was the default and effectively the only mainstream choice. Coloured foils existed but commanded a 30%+ premium and many property owners didn't want to lock themselves into a colour decision.
Then three things happened simultaneously: foiling technology improved (premium matt finishes that don't fade), aluminium became more accessible (which made anthracite normal in residential contexts), and Scandi/architectural design influences pushed dark frames into the mainstream consciousness via Pinterest and Instagram.
What it actually does to a house
- Defines the openings โ anthracite frames make windows read as crisp architectural features rather than disappearing into the wall.
- Suits brick and render equally โ works against red brick, buff brick, white render and stone alike.
- Modernises without contemporising โ somehow it manages to update period homes without making them look modern. Slightly magical.
- Photographs beautifully โ which matters when you eventually sell.
When it's the wrong choice
It's not for every property. Anthracite Grey can fight with:
- Strict conservation officers in some districts who prefer historically authentic colours (Cream, off-white, traditional dark green)
- Yellow brick / sandstone properties where it can read as cold
- Houses with strong existing colour features (bright doors, painted shutters) where it pulls focus
Alternatives if you want something distinctive
- Chartwell Green โ beautiful on cottages and period villas. Slightly more confident than anthracite.
- Schwarzbraun (very dark brown) โ softer than black, warmer than anthracite, gorgeous against red brick.
- Black โ sharper than anthracite, strong on contemporary new-builds.
- Heritage Green or Eclipse (Residence Collection) โ the connoisseur's choice for premium specs.
Should you?
If you're cross-shopping replacement windows in 2026, anthracite is probably the safest "I won't regret this" choice. It dates more slowly than people fear, and it pairs well with virtually any future paint colour or front door.
